1/48 Aircraft

1/48 scale is the perfect compromise between the size of the model and the level of detail it can hold. At this scale, engines and cockpits can start to show some fantastic levels of detail, either scratch-built or using readily available aftermarket resin and photoetch sets. However, new moulding and tooling methods mean that beautifully detailed models can be built straight from the box.

High Planes P-51A "Precious Metal" Featured in Issue 10, Volume 36, December 2014 of Scale Aircraft Modelling.
Added a set of resin wheels, resin exhaust stubs and a vacform canopy. Painted with various shades of Alclad and finished with Mr Metal Color.

Eduard P-39L Airacobra

Eduard Hellcat F6F-5K
In the markings of a remote-controlled unpiloted drone. Built from Eduard's Royal Class kit which comes with resin engine and wheels as well as photoetch wheel wells and enhancements to the cockpit and aircraft exterior.

Built Out-Of-Box. Additional enhancements: Painted markings and navigation lights replaced.

Eduard Polikarpov I-16 Type 24
Built mainly Out-Of-Box with a few minor scratch-built enhancements: Aluminium tubing for wing guns, hatch and seat harness.

Trumpeter Westland Whirlwind
Scratch-built gunsight and seat cushion. Photoetch seat harness and painted markings.

Hasegawa SBD-3 Dauntless
This kit incorporates a substantial aftermarket investment: Aires resin cockpit, Quickboost resin engine and Eduard photoetch dive brakes.

Special Hobby Fokker D.XXI
Built Out-Of-Box with enhancements to the radial engine.

ICM LaGG-3
On this kit I scratch-built the landing flaps and replaced the cockpit quarter lights with acetate. It should be noted that the pilot of 'White 64' removed his canopy sliding section, hence why it is not present!

Trumpeter Nanchang CJ-6 Featured in Issue 4, Volume 36, June 2014 of Scale Aircraft Modelling.
Built Out-Of-Box. The only enhancements made to this kit were the scratch-built seat back cushions which are not supplied by Trumpeter.

Italeri P-47D Thunderbolt Featured in Issue 5, Volume 36, July 2014 of Scale Aircraft Modelling.
I used an Eduard Zoom photoetch set to perk up the cockpit a bit as well as a resin engine to provide more interest behind the prop. I also utilised a Montex mask set for the French roundels.

Academy Lavochkin La-7
For this kit, I used a resin cockpit from CMK and a Squadron Vacform canopy. Additional scratch-built detailing: Armoured glass panel and wheel well detail.
